The Vancouver Hack Space (VHS) has set a goal of February 12th 2010 to destroy the moon. Electric Sheep is a distributed computing project for animating and evolving fractal flames, which are in turn distributed to the networked computers, which display them as a screensaver. The process is transparent to the casual user, who can simply install the software as a screensaver. Alternatively, the user may become more involved with the project, manually creating sheep (video files of animated fractal flames) for upload to the server. This entertaining service is provided for free…

With all the amazing projects we have seen in the last few months at VHS, we want to help a few of these projects make it to a wider audience. Also, we want to give you, our fellow hackers, a little incentive to finish that masterpiece you have been working on and promote the VHS ideals of do-ocracy.

In case you haven't noticed, there's a full sized four player arcade game in the corner at the hackspace. The idea is to convert this into a four player MAME system. The cabinet is
Blitz 99

The current build idea is to use the XBOX that's in the space and already has MAME installed. Failing this, we will round up a desktop to use.

Because of our creative user base we could design our telco around a knowledge sharing model.. All users have access to the core configuration code and overall system workflow. Beyond this the user is invited to streamline the system or find new cost effective ways of doing things. This could be anything from slick management interfaces or area code based cost effective sip routing. Lower overall system cost means a lower monthly bill.

We are now at 45 West Hastings Street, and VHS is now a 24/7 Hackerspace to serve the needs of the interested hacker/crafter/hobbyist/whatever. We anticipate that in a year's time, we will need to grow out of the space and into something bigger.

VHS demands Robot Ponies from Vancouver City hall

The Vancouver Hack Space (VHS) wants the City of Vancouver to provide Robot Ponies to taxpayers. VHS is willing to provide the services of building and testing the prototype Robot Pony. As a Not For Profit organization VHS would be open to any support from the City of Vancouver and Mayor Gregor Robertson. Mayor Gregor Robertson was recently quoted as saying “Who are all these fuckin’… who are these hacks man?” We're pretty sure he meant Hackers…

Silkscreening

VHS has several silkscreens and associated paraphenalia that can be used for community or personal projects.

If you have art that you would like to print onto t-shirts, posters, etc. you can bring it by the hackspace and burn it into one of our screens. Note that screens are a community resource, so 1) screens stay in the hackspace, and 2) a screen that you've lovingly stripped and burnt with your own design may end up being stripped and re-used by someone else, possibly witho…

This is a great project, and I believe this is a secure method of access 2 phase security need both card and key. Also, when the key is entered wrong 4 times the card resets itself and is void. This is mainly used for networks that need highly secure access and for financial transactions.. though I think with a little bit of work we can get something working for our door.

Tuesday May 12 at 7pm at the Hackery - Introduction to soldering.

We're going to hang out and solder a whole bunch of resistors and leds until everybody is really good at soldering. You will also learn some basic electronics theory. We'll have everything except for the irons for you to learn, so if you have a soldering iron bring it down. We'll also have soldering irons for sale, but they are just cheap ones ($4). It's easier to solder with a better quality soldering iron. We've got a bunch of…

DOWN WITH BETAMAX!

VHS provides a physical space where hackers, computer geeks, engineers, circuit benders, crafters, and other creative types can gather to share ideas, equipment, opinions, and beer. We aim to create a sort of 24/7 brain gym, where members can show up and work on personal projects, consult with friends, and learn new tricks. More than just a studio space, we focus on sharing all sorts of knowledge within a friendly and collaborative atmosphere.

From the SHDH site:

”... a non-exclusive event intended for creative and curious people interested in technology. We're about knowledge sharing, technology exploration, and ad-hoc collaboration. Come to have fun, build things, learn things, and meet new people. It's called hacker culture, and we're here to encourage it.”

About Tor

Tor (The Onion Router) is a free software implementation of second-generation onion routing – a system which claims to enable its users to communicate anonymously on the Internet. Tor aims to conceal its users' identity and their network activity from traffic analysis. Operators of the system operate an overlay network of onion routers which provides anonymity in network location as well as anonymous hidden services.

First reset the router to factory defaults. The reset button is on the back of the router. You will need a paperclip, or something similar to push the button inside of the hole. Press and hold the reset button for 5 sec. This will set the user/password to the defaults.
