Laser Cutter Project

VHS has purchased a badass monster laser cutter for the space! The model number is the CM1080 which sports a 80x100cm work area and an 80W laser.

Current project status:

  1. The laser cutter is physically in the building, and the gantry system and general control systems have been tested to be working.
  2. Laser tube is installed and connected to both power and water, but has not been tested yet.
  3. Vent cover is installed and vent hose is installed between it and the fan.
  4. Vent hose extension needs to be connected from the fan to the laser cutter's vent hose.
  5. Water cooler hose needs to be connected to the laser cutter.
  6. Laser cutter needs to be positioned in the room
  7. It needs to be leveled
  8. Its mirrors need to be aligned
  9. Transformer for converting from 110V to 220V needs to be installed in its wooden box, with holes cut for power cords, switch (which still needs to be wired in) and air flow.
  10. We need safety gear: goggles, spray bottle, fire extinguisher.
  11. It needs to be connected to a computer
  12. It needs to be tested & calibrated
    1. On/Off beam power
    2. E-stop
    3. Limit switches
    4. Beam focus
    5. Beam “straightness” (tilted mirror = angled cuts)
    6. Accuracy & Repeatability
  13. It needs a table of material properties
    1. material type x beam intensity ⇒ depth of cut (mm) or BAD IDEA (do not attempt)
  14. It needs procedure checklists:
    1. normal startup
    2. normal shutdown
    3. E-stop procedure
    4. in-case-of-fire procedure
    5. normal running (between startup & shutdown)
  15. It needs software and accompanying documentation

If you'd like to contact the LCC with any comments or suggestions, please email the VHS-General or VHS-Members mailing lists and we'll get back to you (we don't have a central LCC email yet).
